Annie Ruth (Carpenter) Drew

Mrs. Annie Ruth Drew, known to most as Mrs. Ruth, passed away on Wednesday, May 4, 2022 in Pittsburg at the age of 99.  Mrs. Ruth was born November 5, 1922 to Elvie and Dollie Martin Carpenter in Camp County.  She lived most of her life in Camp County.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary Fannin and husband Jimmy of Gilmer; granddaughter, Susie Brookshire and husband, Jason; great-grandchildren, Drew (her namesake) and Charlie Brookshire, all of Gilmer; and sister, Laverne Strube of Pittsburg.  She is preceded in death by her husband of 70 years, Kynerd Drew; her parents; granddaughter, Julie Fannin; brother, Roy Carpenter; and sister Rachel Pierce.

A beloved high school business teacher for 34 years, she left her mark on the students and staff of Union Hill I.S.D.  Everyone loved Mrs. Drew.  Always quick to give a smile or a hug, she never forgot a face, and she made every single person feel like they were her favorite.  Her generous and loving spirit was evident in how she lived her daily life, and how she treated those around her. She loved Jesus and His church, and was an active member of Matinburg Baptist Church where she served as church clerk for decades.  You could show up to the Drew home unannounced, and would quickly be offered a cup of coffee and a homemade piece of one of Mrs. Ruth’s delicious pies.

As she got older, she enjoyed working puzzles with her family and with her friends at Southern Winds.  Her “little boys”, Drew and Charlie, were a source of joy for her, and the feeling was mutual.  They adored their Nanny.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Saturday, May 7, 2022 at the Erman Smith Funeral Home Chapel in Pittsburg with Bro. Dickie Mauk and Bro. Roy Eledge officiating.  Interment will follow at Matinburg Cemetery in Camp County.  There will be a visitation held Friday May 6, 2022 from 5:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M. at the funeral home.
